Everton to name short-term Dyche replacement as ‘unbelievable’ chance arises
Everton could name a new manager on a short-term basis if they sack Sean Dyche, according to Alan Stubbs.
The former Toffees defender is certain that the Merseyside-based club will struggle to achieve their primary target for the season – avoiding relegation – if they do not sack Dyche.
In a message to The Friedkin Group, he then said that hiring a new manager on an 18-month deal would stand everyone in good stead.
“I think right now, obviously, it’s going to be very difficult for them to achieve the number one target if he [Dyche] is still in the job”, Stubbs said on the A View From The Bullens podcast (6 January).
“So, therefore, there are, I think, a couple of ways you can go about it. You bring somebody on a short-term basis and you agree a payoff.
“If you give someone 18 months, you agree a payoff within that, it’s going to cost you [to replace Dyche] anyway.
“I think it’s an opportunity for whoever comes in, to be honest, to have a quick win because I think they could get a response out of this team.
“I think they could quickly get themselves away from the relegation [zone] and I think they come out of it with a bit of kudos, and they get good PR from it.
“Ultimately and most importantly, they get an opportunity at an unbelievable football club.”
Alan Stubbs moots short-term Sean Dyche replacement at Everton
Dyche is increasing pressure at Goodison Park after the 1-0 loss against Bournemouth on Saturday, 4 January.
The Friedkin Group are reportedly considering replacing the former Burnley boss immediately despite not having concerns over him previously.
Graham Potter is emerging as a serious option to take over from Dyche, although West Ham United are in talks to hire him as Julen Lopetegui’s replacement [Alan Nixon].
David Moyes has also been mooted as an option, but Dan Friedkin and co are concerned bringing him back to Merseyside would be a step backwards.
It, therefore, remains to be seen how the new owners handle the situation, especially if Dyche is sacked immediately.
The Toffees face Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup on Thursday, 9 January. A poor result in that game would almost certainly be the last nail in the coffin for Dyche.
It is worth noting that Everton are placed 16th in the Premier League after 19 games. They sit only a point above 18th-placed Ipswich Town, but have a game in hand.
West Ham are reportedly looking to hire Potter until the end of the season initially and the Friedkins-owned club could take a similar approach if they listen to Stubbs.
