Moyes is seen as the leading contender to replace the English manager and has agreed to take over at the Blues already [Graeme Bailey, 9 January].

Wayne Rooney and David Moyes return nostalgic at Everton

While it looks like Moyes will be the next Toffees boss if things go to plan, the idea of Rooney being the second in command is fascinating.

While the 39-year-old hasn’t had the best of managerial careers, getting sacked by Plymouth Argyle recently, his influence in the Goodison dressing room could be immense.

Duncan Ferguson played a significant role at the Merseyside outfit when Carlo Ancelotti was in charge, and the former England striker might potentially have a similar impact.

Everton are hovering around the relegation zone at the moment, one point ahead of 18th-place Ipswich Town, and they need strong characters in the dressing room right now.

Rooney made his way through the youth ranks at the Toffees before taking the English top flight by storm at Old Trafford.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Blues were able to convince the 39-year-old to be the assistant behind Moyes, considering his underwhelming stint as a manager.

The Scotsman’s arrival will undoubtedly be backed by the Goodison faithful, who wanted to see Dyche gone long back.

If the former West Ham United boss were to return to the Merseyside outfit, it would be interesting to see who would make up his backroom staff.

In other Everton news, the Friedkins will look to point a “big-name” manager to replace Dyche.
