Bent shares what he was screaming during ‘Superb’ Everton v Tottenham moment

Darren Bent has praised Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his composure as he scored Everton’s first goal against Tottenham.

The striker gave his side the lead after 13 minutes, as his side beat Spurs 3-2, with an impressive goal as he saw off the defenders before striking a powerful shot into the net.

The 27-year-old looked assured after having had a poor season, scoring just two goals coming into Sunday’s (19 January) game.

Bent was keen to credit Calvert-Lewin, even if he was shouting at him to shoot earlier than he did.

He said during half-time on Sky Sports Premier League (19 January): “Yeah it was superb from Dominic Calvert-Lewin because this is a finish of someone who’s in rich goalscoring form and that’s not him.

“But the first touch there I’m screaming to myself ‘just hit it’ but he doesn’t. It’s the composure to be able to manipulate the ball in such a tight area.

“I know Daws’ is not happy with the defending from Tottenham but from an Everton perspective the pass from Idissa Gueye is fantastic, the weight of pass.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin gets on the scoresheet for Everton

It has been a low-quality campaign for Calvert-Lewin so far and, as a result, there has been plenty of speculation surrounding his future as the striker is out of contract at the end of the term.

However, the arrival of David Moyes could prove to be exactly what is needed to revive the 27-year-old at Goodison Park as he looked like a much-improved player against Tottenham.

As Bent says, the composure he showed in the opposition’s box to be able to keep the ball under his control and then strike only when he was in the right position shows a player of quality.

While the striker has shown that quality in the past, it’s not what you would expect to see from a striker who is out of form.

Nevertheless, Calvert-Lewin looked confident in his performance today and if he can keep up these standards throughout the remainder of the season, he could certainly be adding to his tally again.
