Gary Neville was stunned by the footage he viewed of Everton defender James Tarkowski against Liverpool.

The Toffees visited Anfield to take on their arch rivals in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, 2 April.

So far, neither side has managed to break the deadlock with the score 0-0.

Sky Sports pundit Neville admits Tarkowski was "lucky"

The English centre-back clattered into Alexis Mac Allister and while he did get a bit of the ball, his feet were in the air and they caught the Liverpool defender pretty high.

The referee decided to give a yellow card and after the VAR carefully reviewed it, they felt that no further action was needed for that.

It took the Argentina international a while to get to his feet with the physios monitoring him.

Speaking live on Sky Sports, Neville said: "He's very lucky there, Tarkowski. He really is. It will be reviewed obviously but I think it's a bad one. That's a potential leg breaker."

Everton fortunate to not be down to ten men

It's undoubtedly a decision that could've gone against Everton and David Moyes will know that.

The away fans at Anfield too, once they've seen the video slowed down, will be aware that the Toffes were lucky to have it go in their favour.

These are the kinds of decisions that the VAR stick with the call made by the on-field referees.

Sam Barrot gave a yellow card initially and that was the decision that the officials in Stockley Park agreed with.

It remains to be seen how this game transpires but Everton will know that if they get something from it, there will be a stroke of good fortune.

Moyes won't complain as plenty of calls have gone against his side since he's taken charge.
