Michael Keane’s future at Everton has been speculated upon throughout the summer.

The defender has been at Goodison Park since 2017 and has played over 200 matches for the Toffees.

However, Keane’s contract at Everton is set to expire at the end of June, and the 32-year-old is on course to become a free agent within hours.

This has seen Wrexham linked with Keane, as the former England international looks to lock down a club for the upcoming season.

In recent weeks, David Moyes has been more proactive in securing the futures of his players.

Jarrad Branthwaite is expected to sign a new contract in the coming days despite the near-endless speculation linking the defender away.

Keane has been a regular at Everton for many years

Now, according to Paul Joyce via The Times (30 June), Keane is now set to follow suit.

The report states that the talks between Everton and the centre-back over a new contract have restarted.

The Toffees now want to keep Keane at the Merseyside club and are hopeful that an agreement can be reached.

If successful, the funds that would have been used to buy a replacement can be directed elsewhere.

New funds now have to be used by Moyes in the transfer market

If new funds are set to become available due to the Keane deal, this must be made available immediately to Moyes.

Multiple signings are needed, especially in attack, and the Toffees cannot afford to wait around.

If they are not, the Keane deal is essentially pointless, as the centre-back has been rapidly declining in ability.

Some of Keane’s performers last season were awful, and the only benefit of the contract is that funds can now be used to finally end Everton’s attacking woes.

Hopefully, Moyes has targets in mind, and with pre-season about to start, official moves now have to be made.
