Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl is set to join Everton on a loan with an obligation to buy deal.

Rohl will become Everton's eighth summer signing, with the Toffees already spending over £100million this window.

David Moyes has been keen to add to midfield following the departure of Abdoulaye Doucoure, and the signing of Rohl on deadline day will showcase the board's ambition to the Everton fans.

Merlin Rohl's obligation to buy deal to cost £21.6m

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has announced that Rohl will cost Everton €25m (£21.6m) as his medical gets underway.

The 23-year-old has been at Freiburg since 2022, breaking into the first team during the 2023/24 season.

He has also featured prominently for the Germany U21s, playing a part in their run to the European Championship final this summer as his country lost out to England.

Some Everton fans may be sceptical of Rohl's injury record in the last few years, with the midfielder tearing his syndesmosis ligament last season.

  • 2023/24 - Five games missed
  • 2024/25 - 19 games missed

Regardless, it is clear that Moyes has another talented midfielder at his disposal as Everton look to continue their good start to the season.

Rohl could compete with both Idrissa Gana Gueye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for starting spot

Dewsbury Hall has been brilliant for the Toffees in their first three matches and scored his first goal for the club during the 3-2 win against Wolves.

With Rohl primarily viewed as an attacking midfielder, he would have to do a lot to claim that starting spot off Dewsbury-Hall's hands.

The German can also play as a holding midfielder, meaning that replacing Gueye in the starting lineup could be a possibility that Moyes entertains.

Gueye was particularly ineffective against Wolves and the arrival of Rohl could reduce his minutes on the pitch.
