David Moyes can finally end 23-year Anfield hoodoo in Everton vs Liverpool

David Moyes is hoping to finally put an end to a plight that has cursed him throughout his career when Everton travel to Liverpool on Saturday.

Liverpool are favourites against Everton, but the Toffees will hope their early-season form can translate into an upset at Anfield.

The Reds have enjoyed a strong start to the season themselves, a late penalty against Burnley on Sunday giving them their fourth straight Premier League win to kick off the campaign.

Moyes will be hopeful, however, with the stats revealing that Everton have spent longer in winning positions this season than Liverpool.

Jack Grealish has a better goal contribution record against Liverpool than any other Premier League team, and the winger will be hoping to add to his tally.

David Moyes has an appalling record at Anfield

Moyes has received huge praise for his impact at Everton since the Blues brought him back in January.

The Scot has transformed the Toffees, who were sitting just a point clear of the relegation zone when Sean Dyche was sacked.

The manager’s miraculous effect on Everton is just the latest in what has been a long and illustrious Premier League career for Moyes.

But there still remains one standout blemish on the 62-year-old’s managerial career.

Moyes has travelled to Anfield with Everton, Sunderland, West Ham, and Manchester United, but has never emerged victorious.

Saturday’s match will be the Scot’s 23rd attempt to win at Anfield and his 45th match against Liverpool overall, with just six of them resulting in wins.

Remarkably, Moyes’ 20 Premier League games without a win at Anfield is the longest any manager has gone in the competition without victory at the stadium.

David Moyes will have to be brave to beat Liverpool

Despite Liverpool’s winning run, weaknesses have been identified and exploited by opposing teams.

Bournemouth looked to hit the Reds on the break and to great effect, with Antoine Semenyo scoring a quick-fire double.

And Arsenal and Burnley stifled the champions by adopting a rigid system when in defence, with Arne Slot’s side relying on set-pieces to find the breakthrough in both cases.

Such is the nature of Liverpool at Anfield, the home side is likely to dominate the ball. Everton must be brave and intelligent, applying pressure when necessary, and exploiting the spaces when they open up.
