Everton crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 loss to Wolves on Tuesday.

David Moyes made seven changes to his Everton starting line-up for the clash against Premier League opposition at Molineux.

Ultimately, it failed to pay off, as the likes of Tyler Dibling, Tim Iroegbunam, and Dwight McNeil failed to step up for Everton when they needed them to.

It raises serious questions about the strength in depth in the Blues' squad, but also about Moyes' priorities.

Jim White shocked at Everton cup reveal

Everton have not had a good record in the Carabao Cup over the past decade, they have only made it past the third round five times in the last 15 years.

Jim White could not believe that reveal, and pointed out where the Merseysiders are going wrong when it comes to the domestic cups.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 24 September (10:30 am), he said: “In the last 15 years, 10 third-round exits... It is a decade-long pattern here.

“Buck the trend, field your toughest team, go out and win it.”

David Moyes will regret his Everton decision

There are, of course, reasons why the Blues have not been focused on the cup competitions in the past decade.

The majority of that time has been spent fighting brutal relegation battles, so the priority has been elsewhere, on maintaining their top-flight status and keeping the finances on the right side of the line.

  • Everton were eliminated from the competition by Southampton on penalties last season
  • The Toffees have suffered exits to the likes of QPR, Swansea City and Norwich City in that period
  • They reached the quarter-finals in 2022/23 and the semi-finals in 2015/16

Moyes will feel this is a missed opportunity, as his side do not look like they will be in that position this season, and he could have named a stronger starting team.

The decision to leave the likes of Grealish, Iliman Ndiaye and Beto on the bench looks ridiculous in hindsight and White may be right.

Moyes should have started a strong team, and then took them off when the job was done, but instead, the Toffees are eliminated and only have the FA Cup to potentially end their nearly 30-year trophy drought.
