Everton were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham on Monday evening.

David Moyes chose Beto to lead Everton's line, leaving Thierno Barry on the bench in a decision that he might regret now.

Everton went into the break 1-0 ahead, but they were undone by a Jarrod Bowen strike in the second half that meant both sides shared the points at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Nuno Espirito Santo is used to losing against Everton recently, but he did not on this occasion, on a frustrating evening for Moyes' side.

Michael Keane stuns Duncan Ferguson and Jamie Carragher in Everton draw

Michael Keane was the hero for Everton in the first half, getting on the end of a James Garner cross to give the hosts the lead.

Jamie Carragher could not believe Keane had reached the ball when he poked it over Alphonse Areola in the 18th minute, as the ball was behind him.

Speaking after the contest on Sky Sports (22:12 pm), he said: “It almost feels like behind him in some ways.”

Former Blues star Duncan Ferguson agreed, saying: “Incredible wasn’t it, how he got the height, he jumped off his two feet didn’t he, normally, you are jumping off of one.

“He got off two, he got it behind him, what a header.”

Everton can rely on Michael Keane going forward

Keane has proven his value to Moyes and Co in the absence of Jarrad Branthwaite, with the 23-year-old having been missing since the Roma clash in August.

The former Burnley man has stepped up, and not been overawed by being back in the first team after hardly playing last season, under both Sean Dyche and Moyes after he took over.

  • Keane has made seven appearances for Everton this season
  • He only played 18 times last season, with 14 games in the Premier League
  • Two of those 18 matches came in the Carabao Cup, while two came in the FA Cup

Branthwaite may have a battle on his hands to win his spot back at the heart of defence, when he returns to action, with Keane in this kind of form.

The Blues can rely on the 32-year-old, both in terms of defending and attacking, as he proved against the Hammers, and he will not relinquish his place without a huge fight.

He may well win it, with the way he is playing right now.
