Kevin Thelwell to pounce as Everton set to lose another key figure to Rangers

Rangers are set to poach another staff member from Everton as former director of football Kevin Thelwell looks to steady the ship at the Glasgow club.

Thelwell left Everton to join Rangers at the end of last season, after more than three years overseeing transfer matters at Goodison Park.

In Scotland, the sporting director has come under heavy fire amid the early-season failures of former Southampton manager Russell Martin.

Everton head of recruitment Dan Purdy also joined Rangers at the end of the season, with the path between the two clubs becoming a commonly trodden one in the past months.

Angus Kinnear joined Everton as CEO to replace Thelwell, and the former Leeds United sporting director oversaw a positive first summer at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton set to lose head of emerging talent to Rangers

Rangers signed Youssef Chermiti from Everton on transfer deadline day, in a deal worth around £7.5million.

But the striker is yet to find his feet in Scotland, amid a terrible start to the season at Ibrox.

Under the direction of Thelwell and the 49ers, 55-time Scottish champions Rangers hired former Southampton and Swansea boss Martin in the summer.

The manager had looked to make a strong start when his side knocked Panathinaikos out of the Champions League qualifiers, but results have taken a dark turn in the weeks since.

Rangers have won just one of their opening six games in the Scottish Premiership, and were thumped 9-1 by Club Brugge over two legs of the Champions League play-offs.

Fans have called for Thelwell’s departure, along with Martin, but the former Everton man looks secure in his role, for now.

As reported by Rangers Review on 1 October, the head of football has now plucked Everton’s head of emerging talent, Nathan Fisher, who will take up the role of head scout at Ibrox.

Kevin Thelwell endured mixed Everton tenure

Thelwell has had a tumultuous time of things at Ibrox and had a rather mixed spell during his Goodison Park tenure.

Placed in extremely difficult circumstances amid point deductions and financial burdens, the former Wolves man led recruitment well overall, and ultimately made sure Everton stayed up amid plenty of off-field struggled.

Kinnear has made a positive start, though, and there is no reason why Everton cannot quickly move on from Fisher’s exit.
