The Friedkin Group must recover fatal Everton transfer error after what happened vs Burnley

Everton recorded a goalless draw against Burnley in the Premier League, and this result only highlighted the need for the January transfer window to open.

The Toffees only mustered an xG of 0.82 at Turf Moor, as David Moyes’ men struggled to break down the league’s second-bottom side.

Wayne Rooney even felt Burnley weren’t good enough in attack to warrant winning three points, on an afternoon that lacked quality in the final third.

Everton sorely missed top scorer Iliman Ndiaye and Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish, who was absent from the visit to Burnley with illness.

Ndiaye and Grealish have carried the attacking threat in Moyes’ attack throughout 2025/26, with their replacements failing to have a similar influence.

The Friedkin Group have paid the price for lack of depth

Tyler Dibling made his first Premier League start for Everton against Burnley on Saturday, with the 19-year-old largely impressing down the right flank.

Tyler Dibling’s stats vs Burnley
88 minutes played
2 key passes
4 successful dribbles
2 fouls drawn
3 shots
6/10 ground duels won

Unfortunately, similar can’t be said for Dwight McNeil on the left, as the 26-year-old didn’t complete a single accurate cross or dribble against his former club.

Watching Ndiaye and Grealish on both wings compared to Dibling and McNeil is chalk and cheese, with The Friedkin Group paying the price for not investing in better depth out wide.

Of course, Dibling arrived from Southampton for £40million in the summer, but he’s nowhere near Ndiaye’s level, while Everton’s big-money signing Thierno Barry has only scored once since moving to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees arguably needed to sign more proven, Premier League-quality players, instead of relying on youngsters with big potential.

Moyes is now seeing how difficult it is to break teams down without Ndiaye and Grealish, but that issue could have been avoided if there hadn’t been a lack of quality bench options.

What Everton are planning in January

Everton’s terrific wing duo isn’t the only ingredient Moyes has missed, as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s injury has seen their creativity decrease.

The Englishman has grabbed six goal involvements from midfield since joining from Chelsea and could return for the showdown with Nottingham Forest on December 30.

That will be a huge boost to the Merseyside outfit, although Moyes knows that reinforcements are required in January.

Everton want to sign three new players, including a full-back, central midfielder and striker to improve the quality and depth of their options.

As it stands, Everton have targeted Roma’s Artem Dovbyk as a possible striker, while Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney is the main midfielder on their radar.
