‘Everton will surely offer new Vitalii Mykolenko contract as financial own goal on cards’

Everton are yet to agree a new contract with defender Vitalii Mykolenko.

The Toffees star has played 29 times this season, but his future is undecided at the moment, with no update on talks.

His current terms are set to expire in the summer, although there is reportedly an option to extend it by a further year if David Moyes‘ side wants to.

Liverpool Echo reporter Chris Beesley thinks it makes sense for them to offer him a new deal, as it would be a “financial own goal” to not do so.

Everton may want an upgrade on Mykolenko, but to let him leave for free makes no sense.

Why Mykolenko has to be offered new Everton deal

Mykolenko is a polarising figure at Everton, he impresses sometimes but also leaves supporters wanting much more.

However, Beesley’s point makes sense, he highlights that the Merseysiders spent £17million on the left-back and they will surely not want to lose him for nothing.

Writing on 7 April, he said: “Vitalii Mykolenko is now set to enter the final three months of his current contract.

“Given that the Blues shelled out £17million on him, it might seem something of a financial own goal to risk losing him for free, so presumably they want to offer him a new deal to protect the value of their asset.”

How has Mykoelnko performed this season?

Mykolenko has played 26 times in the Premier League, and he has provided one assist in those matches, per Sofascore.

He has averaged 61.3 touches, losing possession 14.7 times, which suggests that he is not the most comfortable in possession.

He has recorded a 79 per cent pass accuracy and makes 0.7 key passes, but he has not formed the connection with Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye on the left-hand side that fans have wanted to see.

Mykolenko’s stats this season in the league

Defensively, the 26-year-old makes 1.4 tackles per game, 4.3 clearances per game and 3.4 ball recoveries per game.

In terms of duels, he wins 49 per cent on the ground and 53 per cent of those contested in the air, which suggests that he is solid when the opposition are trying to exploit his flank.

The numbers make it an easy decision, the Friedkin Group surely have to make sure that he is tied down in the near future, as like Beesley states, it would be foolish for them to let him leave for free.

The Blues have made enough silly financial decisions in recent years, and the new ownership can’t fall back and do the same thing.
