David Moyes without Idrissa Gueye for Everton vs Sunderland, has ‘outside chance’ for final game
David Moyes has confirmed Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye will be out to face Sunderland in the Premier League on Sunday.
The Senegal international has missed the last two games at the Toffees and won’t be available to face the Black Cats at Hill Dickinson Stadium on 17 May.
Gueye has returned to training, but it’s too soon for him to get back into action for the Blues just yet.
The Merseyside outfit face Tottenham Hotspur in the final game of the season and the 36-year-old has an “outside chance” of featuring in North London on 24 May.
Moyes has relied on Gueye as his midfield general, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Tim Iroegbunam start in his place once again.

David Moyes has selection headache for Everton vs Sunderland
Speaking to the media, Moyes said, “No, Idrissa [Gueye] isn’t fit for the game. And obviously, Braithwaite is out as well. [Gueye] is back on the grass, he’s just not available for this game. There’s an outside chance that he could make Tottenham. So we’ll see how that goes.”
Seamus Coleman will leave Everton at the end of the season once his contract expires.
The 37-year-old will end his 17-year spell at the Toffees and will definitely hope to play in front of the home fans one last time.
| Season | Appearances | Starts | Minutes Played |
| 2025-26 | 3 | 1 | 12 |
| 2024-25 | 5 | 3 | 224 |
| 2023-24 | 12 | 7 | 670 |
It will be interesting to see whether Moyes starts the Republic of Ireland international or gives him any minutes, considering the Blues still have a shot at qualifying for Europe.
Coleman has been a loyal servant and the veteran defender will now decide whether he’ll pick up a coaching role at the Merseyside outfit or continue playing elsewhere for a few more years before hanging up his boots.
David Moyes has Hill Dickinson Stadium priority
Just a few weeks ago, Everton fans were excited about the prospect of potentially having European football in the 2026-27 campaign, but that looks like a long shot after some disappointing results.
Moyes has come under scrutiny from a section of the Toffees’ fanbase for his style of play and tactics of late and the noise around him will surely only grow if Sunderland come to Hill Dickinson Stadium and take anything back to Wearside.

The Scottish manager has seen his team give up leads and drop valuable points against Crystal Palace, Manchester City, West Ham United and Liverpool in back-to-back fixtures.
When the going gets tough, it seems Moyes and the players are unable to cope with the pressure, and that needs to change immediately in L3.
