David Moyes sack questions raised at Everton as Toffees bow out with pathetic final day defeat to Tottenham

David Moyes‘ future at Everton will rightly be questioned following a negative end to the season and an even more pathetic loss to Tottenham.

The Toffees closed their season with a pathetic defeat to Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, as Joao Palhina’s goal proved the difference.

It wasn’t long ago that some were suggesting Moyes needed a new contract this summer, but things have changed after the Blues ended their campaign with no wins in seven games.

Everton looked like they were in pole position to earn their place in a European competition for next season, but a multitude of calamitous performances shifted the dynamic.

Moyes led his side to finish just one point better than last season‘s tally, despite being backed in the summer, and calls for his sacking have already started among the fanbase.

David Moyes’ future assessed

The top and bottom of it is that Everton haven’t progressed from last season, and have zero excuses for that.

A one-point progression with a summer spend of around £100million, including the loan signing of Jack Grealish, who was available for a season, simply isn’t good enough.

Everton’s results post-international break

The downfall clearly started after the March international break, as a win over Brentford would have given the Blues much-needed momentum for the run-in.

However, following a draw against the Bees, the Toffees then went on to break a Premier League record for conceding the most consecutive stoppage-time altering goals in history, with three in a row.

However, it could also be argued that this statistic and overall run of games haven’t been helped by the lack of success in the January transfer window.

Moyes was hell-bent on signing a new striker and right-back and didn’t get that, though it could also be said that Beto’s recent run of form almost cancels one of these requests out.

This is what Everton must do with Moyes this summer

There is every right to question Moyes, it hasn’t been good enough, and it feels like a year wasted when everything was looking so good at one point.

However, the 62-year-old head coach was hounded out of West Ham despite delivering the Hammers a European title, and on the same weekend that Everton supporters were asking him to go, the Hammers were relegated to the Championship without him.

The frustration is more than understandable, especially when it feels like ambition from the owners this summer has been wasted, for several reasons.

But the Friedkin Group must sit down with Moyes this summer, set out a clear transfer plan with the Everton boss, and lay specific targets out for him to hit by the next winter window.

If by then Everton are still not progressing, his dismissal would be fair, but now is not the time.
