Everton reportedly submitted a loan offer for AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud on transfer deadline day which also included an option to buy.

According to the Times [1 February], the proposal was worth £7million for a permanent transfer should the Toffees avoid relegation this season.

The 2020/21 Champions League winner with Chelsea was not interested in leaving a title-challenging team for Goodison Park.

Hail Mary after Hail Mary

Everton cannot have realistically thought that Giroud would opt to leave a team that won the Serie A last season for one battling relegation.

Despite his age, Giroud was still the first choice for France at the World Cup and had an impressive tournament in Qatar.

To say that he still cannot perform at the highest level is incorrect and if he's at Milan, there is little reason for him to leave for Everton.

As it turns out that the Frenchman was one of a number of attackers the Toffees tried to and failed to sign on the final day of the window.

This is proof that the board had no targets in mind and just randomly saw players who may be tempted to leave on deadline day.

It's not surprising that they faced rejections as anyone can see from the outside that the Toffees are not run too well and nothing is going to change unless the structure doesn't.
