Seamus Coleman contract decision close in brand new Everton update

Everton captain Seamus Coleman is on the brink of agreeing a new one-year contract to stay at Goodison Park, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper has reported that the 35-year-old is "edging closer" to playing out a 16th season with the club, which will also be the final campaign at Goodison Park.

Ongoing talks are said to be positive between the two parties and although nothing is yet signed, a decision is now close from Coleman.

Next season is shaping up to be one long farewell for Everton's home, Goodison Park, but it could also be the final campaign of their longest-serving player in Coleman, who is confident he still has plenty to offer [Liverpool Echo].

The 35-year-old may have been restricted to just 12 appearances due to injury last season, but Sean Dyche will be keen to draw on his experience if and when new faces arrive at the club this summer.

Furthermore, the precarious financial situation may restrict their ability to buy a replacement should Coleman - and fellow veteran full-back Ashley Young [Liverpool World] - depart on free transfers.

If either Coleman or Young were to leave the club this summer, Dyche would have just Nathan Patterson - currently out with a EURO2024-ending injury - at his disposal, with very little money available to fund a new right-back.

Player sales in other positions will facilitate replacements arriving at Goodison Park, and as they prepare for potentially the most transitional season in their history, any new face need look no further than Coleman to understand the true essence of Everton.
