Steven Gerrard says Everton fans are right to feel aggrieved following Manchester City's 100-plus charges.

City have been found guilty of breaching 114 Premier League financial rules by an independent commission.

The Citizens have denied wrongdoing and have already lodged an appeal, which will likely be heard this year.

Everton fans know all about financial wrongdoing at their club, having had a couple of different points deductions in recent years.

City's issues span much deeper, though, with calls for the club to be kicked out of the Premier League entirely.

And Gerrard has now namechecked Everton as he gave his verdict on arguably the biggest story in Premier League history.

Why does Steven Gerrard think Everton fans should be aggrieved?

It could be many more months before we discover the punishment City face, assuming the charges are upheld at the appeal.

What we do know is that history has altered as a result of City's - let's face it - cheating.

Not just in the seasons these charges span between 2009 and 2018, but also beyond that as those successful years put the footing in place to push on.

In the early years in particular, Everton were in competition with City for European football.

And Gerrard says pretty much every club, Everton included, have reason to be annoyed.

"I've heard a lot of City players, a lot of City fans, celebrity fans, say ‘you can’t take those moments away from us’," he said on Monday's edition of The Overlap Daily.

"What about the memories they've taken away from, not just possibly me and the team that I played in, but over that period of nine or 10 years?

"Spurs fans, United fans, Everton fans, teams at the bottom, teams in the cups.

"The City ex-players, current players and the City owners, everyone connected with City, have got to think about the memories that they potentially have stolen from everyone else."

Gerrard, to his credit, has a point.

Everton to be 'most aggrieved club' as Man City battle with Premier League rumbles on

How history could have been different for Everton

Going back to the 2008-09 season, Everton finished five places above City in a European spot.

The following year that all changed, as Everton finished in eighth and City in fifth.

In fact, Everton have not finished above the Citizens since.

Not that supporters will want to dwell on the past, and 'what could have been', but one place was at times the different between success and failure.

If only Everton had also worked some "sham" magic themselves.
