Everton striker Youssef Chermiti's ankle setback is potentially a Grade 3 ligament injury, according to Dr Rajpal Brar.

The injury expert claims that as the 20-year-old has not returned for over two months, it is more serious than first feared.

It's also prone to re-injury so the Toffees will have to be careful with how they reintegrate him back into the squad.

The Merseyside outfit are taking on Aston Villa in the Premier League on 14 September at Villa Park.

"Based on the timeline of him being out for over two months, I reckon this could be a Grade 3 ligament injury and more serious than thought initially.

"In terms of protocols that need to be followed in order to avoid re-injury, the club will focus on gradually restoring mobility, strength and neuromuscular control that advances from gym work to on-pitch training to team training and then bounce minutes.

"The foot and ankle can be quite sensitive so have to always monitor load and response."

Youssef Chermiti has been a bit-part player for Everton

The Portuguese striker was an unused substitute on numerous occasions for the Toffees last season with Sean Dyche favouring other options.

He made 18 Premier League appearances but only once did he manage to play the full 90 minutes of a game.

Chermiti is still young but if he does not get the game time he wants this season, he could angle for an exit away from the club.
