Former Everton boss Frank Lampard is back in football management with Coventry City but his arrival won't be met with fanfare by everyone.

Lampard endured a difficult time in the dugout at Goodison Park, engineering a late escape at the end of the 2021-22 campaign but was sacked in January 2023 with the club second bottom of the Premier League (Sky News).

He returned to Chelsea at the end of that campaign for a brief interim spell but this is his first full-time venture since being dismissed at Goodison Park.

Coventry supporters themselves were pretty unhappy when unpopular boss Mark Robins, who had led the club from League 2 to the brink of the Premier League, was sacked earlier this month.

Lampard's arrival (Coventry X) will certainly draw eyes and some fans might be excited to see what the ex-England international can bring to the club.

Ex-Everton man Ellis Simms won't be happy with Frank Lampard Coventry appointment

But one player in particular might not be too thrilled and that man is Ellis Simms.

Simms, 23, was sold to Coventry back in July 2023 for an undisclosed fee (BBC Sport) and there was on decision Lampard made during his time with the Toffees that probably will have rankled.

During the 2022-23 campaign, Simms was on loan at Sunderland where he had enjoyed a fruitful spell, scoring seven goals in 17 games.

Lampard opted to recall him from that temporary stint but admitted that he wasn't sure how much he was going to use him.

In quotes reported by SI.com, Lampard said at the time: "I haven't crossed that bridge (if Simms will be involved).

"I know he is coming back for us now and we will get him back in and it's another attacking option.

"It's good he comes off a pretty positive loan at Sunderland. He's our player, so that might give him an extra spring and he has to come in and add and give competition and we will see."

It was an odd thing to admit that he had recalled Simms without knowing whether he was going to play. It would be understandable if Simms were feeling pretty gutted about this appointment today.
