Goodison News is delighted to welcome aboard our brilliant new columnist Bryan King, the former goalkeeper who spent over eight years as a scout at Everton and 28 years in total in first-team scouting roles. Bryan also spent six years on Tottenham’s recruitment team and 11 years scouting at Aston Villa across two different spells…

Bryan King believes Andre Gomes could have a say in a potential switch to Everton for Benfica midfielder Florentino Luis.

The Toffees hold a “genuine interest” in the 24-year-old, with the club currently exploring a loan deal for the player [Ben Jacobs, 29 January].

Luis has made over 100 appearances for the Portuguese giants, 25 of which have come in all competitions this season.

Speaking to Goodison News, King said: “Everton certainly can’t go out and spend big money. They can’t spend any money until they get rid of somebody, and who can they get rid of?

“If they are going to sell their best players, that is really jeopardising their position in the Premier League. The prime objective for Everton now is to survive in the Premier League.

“I would imagine Gomes would have tipped Luis off about the possibility of a loan deal. I’m sure there have been conversations saying ‘You’re not getting a game at Benfica, why don’t you come here?’ That’s the way things work today.”
