Everton attacker Dwight McNeil destroyed after what he did v Luton Town
Former Arsenal and West Ham defender Matthew Upson has slammed Everton attacker Dwight McNeil for what he did v Luton Town.
Luton defender Teden Mengi was tangling with the left winger and on feeling the slightest of contact, threw himself to the ground in the hopes of winning a penalty.
The VAR had a brief look at it and did not decide to take any further action with the game ending 1-1.
Speaking on the Premier League world feed, Upson, a BBC pundit said (3 May, 20:16): "I totally agree from where I'm standing. That was poor from McNeil. Was looking for a penalty. I mean look at that. That's unacceptable. No real contact sending him to the floor."
Right decision made not to give Everton the penalty
VAR has come under huge scrutiny this season for its excessive re-refereeing of games but this was not the case on Friday.
McNeil knew that if he went down on little contact, he would not be shown a yellow but could be given a penalty.
He wasn't clean through on goal either so he tried his luck but Tim Robinson was having none of that.
Robinson missed another incident a few minutes later but was rightly asked by the VAR to check it out and it was Mengi at it again.
This time, it was a clear foul on Jarrad Branthwaite and a penalty was rightly given which Dominic Calvert-Lewin placed into the back of the net.
It was a huge confidence booster for him as well as he had just returned from an injury and would've wanted to get back into a rhythm.
