Everton concern raised over Sean Dyche comments at Finch Farm today

James Garner's absence due to a back injury will be cause for "concern" for Sean Dyche at Everton, according to Joe Thomas.

The Liverpool Echo journalist posted on X after Dyche's comments in his pre-match press conference (17 October) t Finch Farm, where he stated that Garner's back issue is still being fully assessed by medical staff.

The full extent of Garner's injury isn't expected to be known for another week, but the midfielder will be joined on the sidelines by Tim Iroegbunam, who is out for weeks with a foot injury.

Thomas said: "Tim Iroegbunam could face weeks out with a foot injury.

"James Garner has a back issue that is still being fully assessed, but which is clearly a concern for the club."

The Toffees' slow start to the season – made blatantly clear by four defeats in a row through August and September – has been mired by Dyche being unable to call upon several of his key players.

Garner is one player in particular who has been called upon to plug gaps in several positions, namely right-back due to the enforced absences of Nathan Patterson, Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young.

However, with the versatile 23-year-old now likely for his own spell out of the team, it remains to be seen who Dyche will turn to as injuries affect all areas of the Toffees' defence.

Facing a winless Ipswich Town side who are beneath them in the table, Dyche will still be taking no chances at Portman Road and must pick the strongest available team.

If players are shoehorned into unfamiliar positions – as he's had to do with Garner – in order to come up with a result, Dyche will be sending a clear message to those above him that reinforcements are needed come January.
