Everton could repeat 1999 misery vs Tottenham that exposes character flaw

Everton are chasing their first win in seven when they face Tottenham on Sunday.

The Toffees enter Sunday's clash with nothing left to play for, and their recent form is the main reason for that.

David Moyes' side are winless in their last six Premier League games, having seen their European ambitions ended by Sunderland last time out.

Nevertheless, the Merseysiders will be looking to end the season on a high against Tottenham, and potentially relegate them when they make the trip to North London.

However, Everton will also be looking to avoid unwanted history which certainly would not bode well for the future of Moyes.

Everton's lack of character on display

For the Toffees to have crumbled at this stage in the season is bad enough in itself, but the nature of some of those results is concerning.

Everton have taken the lead in their last three Premier League encounters, but have still managed to accumulate just two points.

The last time they have led in but failed to win four games in a row in the Premier League was back in 1999, 27 years ago.

If it were to happen again against Tottenham on Sunday, Moyes would be the man who has his name alongside that unwanted piece of history, showcasing a big issue.

The Toffees simply haven't had it in them to maintain a lead recently, and you can sense the lack of urgency as soon as the opposition senses a way back into the game.

Lack of experience not to blame for Everton

If anything, Everton have too much experience in some positions, with the lack of pace at times astounding given the opposition faced.

Michael Keane, James Tarkowski, Idrissa Gueye and Jordan Pickford all have the required experience, and yet none of them have been able to do anything about it.

It's a tactical issue causing them to allow leads to slip, and it will be something Moyes has to address ahead of the new campaign.
