Danny Murphy slammed Seamus Coleman after wasting an early Everton chance before the Toffees were hammered 6-0 by Chelsea on Monday (15 April).

The Toffees captain had the perfect opportunity to assist the match's opening goal at Stamford Bridge, with Beto waiting in the middle of the six-yard box, only to smash it at the forward.

Beto was able to make contact, firing a shot with an xG of 0.96, as per FotMob, but saw his effort rifle over the crossbar before a first-half Cole Palmer hat-trick made both Everton players rue the early chance. Palmer would score again after the break.

Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (15 April, 8:10pm), Murphy said: "That's a poor ball from Coleman. He's absolutely mullered it, knee-high. He doesn't need to.

"You could argue that Beto should score anyway because he gets something on it, but the quality of Coleman's pass...there's just no thinking. It's about a foot too high off the ground!"

It seems harsh to target one person for changing the course of the whole match, but there is no denying that Everton scoring the opener would have changed the game's complexion.

The Toffees have been renowned for their immaculate defence this season, with only Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal conceding fewer goals.

James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite have created a formidable partnership at the back. That is not to say that Palmer would not have scored at all, but taking a 1-0 lead would have given the players something to hang onto.

Of course, with Everton only two points above the relegation after their latest points deduction, the players should be fighting tooth and nail for every point.

However, there was little evidence of any fight as Chelsea racked up the goals in a 6-0 win over Sean Dyche's team at Stamford Bridge.

The team's focus will need to switch to remaining matches against Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Luton Town and Sheffield United if they are to survive the risk of Premier League relegation.
