Everton interviewed Ralf Rangnick before deciding on Carlo Ancelotti
Everton reportedly interviewed German manager-cum-sports executive Ralf Rangnick before deciding to give Carlo Ancelotti the job in 2019.
According to The Telegraph, the former RB Leipzig manager was on the Toffees' priority list when they were looking to replace Marco Silva.
Duncan Ferguson was put in temporary charge while the club interviewed the likes of Rangnick and Ancelotti, before eventually handing the job to the Italian.
Rangnick has since become the Head of Sports and Development at Lokomotiv Moscow and is now being linked with a move to Newcastle post their takeover as the sporting director.
Correct move?
Rangnick would have been a left-field appointment, which probably would have suited Everton at the time.
Ancelotti came in with a big brand and managed to attract some quality names, but his results proved that he relatively underachieved with a strong squad.
At Leipzig, Rangnick got the German side constantly punching above their weight, playing a brand of football that inspired the neutral.
While there is a certain backlash towards the way RB Leipzig rose to prominence among the staunch Bundesliga fans, even they wouldn't deny how entertaining Rangnick sets his teams out to play.
There's a reason why he's seen as one of the purveyors of gegenpressing (counter-pressing) and has inspired world-class managers like Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. [ESPN]
Sadly we'll never know how he would have fared at Goodison Park, but with the benefit of hindsight, he probably would not have done any worse than Ancelotti did at the helm.
