Gabby Agbonlahor flummoxed by what happened with Everton star James Garner on England duty

Everton midfielder James Garner got a run out as England were beaten by Spain in the Nations League.

The Three Lions were in action for the first time since finishing third at the World Cup this summer.

In a back-and-forth contest at Wembley, Thomas Tuchel's side fell to a 3-2 defeat to the world champions on Friday.

Harry Kane had earlier scored, but crucially missed a penalty as England slipped to an opening defeat.

Toffees midfielder Garner was a late call-up after several players dropped out of Tuchel's squad.

Gabby Agbonlahor was speaking about the game on talkSPORT, and was left baffled by one thing involving Garner.

Garner has been playing himself back into fitness during the opening games of the season.

The 25-year-old missed a large chunk of pre-season due to injury, but was back in time for the start of the campaign.

Garner came into Tuchel's thinking late in the previous campaign, but failed to make the squad for the World Cup.

However, he was back in Three Lions action against Spain, and will hope to feature again when England face Czechia on Tuesday.

Former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor spoke generall about "odd decisions" he felt Tuchel made, including starting Jarrell Quansah at right-back over Trent Alexander-Arnold, and taking off former Toffee Anthony Gordon.

And he also felt that Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott should have come on ahead of Garner.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "And then you bring Garner on.

"Listen, I love Garner. But he wasn't called up to the squad, he came into the squad because of injuries.

"And Alex Scott's there and available and you don't bring him on. Just some odd decisions from the manager."

Come off it, Gabby.

This isn't a knock on Scott, who has all the talent to be a top performer for England for the next decade.

But why should that mean that Garner doesn't deserve his chance?

Garner was fantastic for Everton last season, and was a little unfortunate not to make the plane for the World Cup.

It's hardly a travesty that he got a 20-minute run out in a Nations League game is it?

Why must we knock one talented player because another talented player was an unused substitute.

It makes zero sense. Garner more than deserved his run out against Spain.
