How Irish media reacted to 'imperious' Jake O'Brien as Everton man impresses vs Israel

Jake O'Brien impressed in his second match for the Republic of Ireland while away from Everton this international break.

The centre-back featured in Ireland's 3-0 win over Israel in the Nations League on Sunday, which was a first result in the competition for his country.

They lost 1-0 to Kosovo on Thursday, as head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson knew his side simply had to put things right.

David Moyes has chosen to bench O'Brien in each of the Toffees' opening Premier League games, as the playing time away from Merseyside will serve the defender well.

The 25-year-old has fallen down the pecking order after the arrival of Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who now offers strength in the right-back spot.

O'Brien could have to wait for his first start in the league for Everton this campaign, but the Irish media would most likely have something to say about that.

O'Brien played the full 90 minutes for Ireland, playing in his natural position of centre-back.

The defender kept a clean sheet, winning four out of four aerial duels, and 100 per cent of his duels on the ground.

The 6,6" centre-back made 10 defensive contributions in total, boasting an 89 per cent passing accuracy.

He has established himself as a key starter for his nation over the years, and has impressed even more following his performance against Israel.

The Irish Independent gave O'Brien a 7/10 rating and wrote: "The Everton man did all he was asked to do at the heart of the Irish defence and didn’t allow the opposition any chances in the final third. Imperious in the air."

Exitra.ie, also gave him a 7/10 rating, writing: "Dealt with every cross which came his way."

The 42.ie, also recognised O'Brien's kind gesture, handing his shirt to a fan in the stands with a sign after full-time.

O'Brien is currently back-up to Maitland-Niles, James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite in defence for Everton.

O'Brien was made available for transfer by Everton earlier in the summer.

There was said to be interest from several clubs across Europe, but a move away from Hill Dickinson never materialised.

Alan Myers reported that O'Brien would be staying from outside of Everton's HQ on deadline day, suggesting he can also play a role at left-back if needed.

However, O'Brien may already feel like he's been mistreated while at the Blues, and a further lack of game time could be the final straw for him ahead of January.

That's why he may seek a crucial face-to-face conversation with Moyes before then.
