How Welsh media reacted to Everton star Brennan Johnson vs Denmark
Everton star Brennan Johnson played the majority of Wales' 1-0 loss to Denmark on Sunday evening.
The Blues star earned his 49th cap for his country in the UEFA Nations League defeat.
Johnson started the clash at the Cardiff City Stadium, and he spent 76 minutes on the pitch.
He could not help Craig Bellamy's side to another victory, as Rasmus Hojland scored the winning penalty.
That 75th minute strike was the only goal of the contest, and saw the Danes take all three points.
Despite the negative result, the Welsh media were satisfied with the Hill Dickinson Stadium star's display.
What did the Welsh media say about Everton star Brennan Johnson?
Johnson put in a solid display in his latest international appearance and his efforts were appreciated.
Wales Online gave him a six out of 10 rating, saying: “Got into some good positions at times and had a couple of sights at goal, but couldn’t quite find the invention needed as the game wore on."
Y Clwb Pel Droad gave him a seven, saying: “His best performance in a Wales shirt for some time, looking confident going forward while also putting in the work defensively.
"He was replaced shortly after the visitors opened the scoring.”
Pretty resounding positive reviews for the Everton man from the national media despite the poor scoreline.
It was a good night for Johnson despite the loss, but do the stats support the media's assessment?
What do the stats say about Johnson's performance?
Johnson had 36 touches in the game, with five coming in the opposition box.
According to FotMob data, he completed both of his dribble attempts and created one chance for his teammates.
The Toffees ace completed 78 per cent of his passes and one of his two cross attempts.
He recorded two shots, but did not hit the target with either of them as he tried to make something happen.
He also managed three recoveries and won three ground duels out of five, for a 60 per cent success rate.
Johnson still has work to do to become a regular starter under David Moyes, but it was an encouraging sign.
He was constantly trying to make something happen despite the opposition being the better side for much of the clash.
That kind of attitude will serve him well at Finch Farm, but he needs to show it in matches, and start scoring and assisting regularly for the People's club.
His versatility could be helpful, he can play across the front line or in the number 10, so that helps his chance of success.
