Premier League release official statement on Everton vs Newcastle United controversy

The Premier League have moved to clarify a contentious moment that happened in Everton's heavy loss to Newcastle United on Saturday.

Everton were thumped 4-1 by Newcastle at Hill Dickinson Stadium in a game in which they found themselves three goals down at the break.

Malick Thiaw opened the scoring inside the opening minute, before Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade put Newcastle out of sight.

Thiaw's second piled further misery on David Moyes, who cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines, though Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall did pull one back on what was otherwise a day to forget for the Toffees.

Premier League clarify Thierno Barry disallowed goal decision

Thierno Barry thought he had opened his account for Everton shortly before Dewsbury-Hall's goal, but his celebrations were cut short.

Barry was superb against Manchester United earlier this week and deserves a goal for his efforts, but it was not to be.

After scoring from around eight yards out, VAR intervened and adjudged that Barry handled the ball before scoring.

In a message sent via their Match Centre account on X, the Premier League posted: "After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to Everton."

Referee Craig Pawson relayed the message to supporters inside the ground, although the game was already done and dusted at that point anyway.

Everton followed up their best result of the season with their worst, in what was a real horror show from Moyes' men.

A tight contest was predicted for Everton versus Newcastle, but it was anything but.

Everton were soundly beaten by Newcastle

As pointed out in the Sofascore graphic above, the Magpies had 13 shots to Everton's 10, with eight and two of those on target respectively.

While there was little between the sides in terms of possession, with Newcastle edging it with 51.2 per cent of the ball, the visitors were far more efficient.

Moyes will simply be grateful that Everton have a quick turnaround in fixtures, with a trip to Bournemouth to come on Tuesday night.
