Everton are well-placed to complete a transfer for Wilfred Ndidi after the Nigerian's contract at Leicester City expired.

Journalist Dan Bardell told Goodison News on 1 July that with current Toffees midfielder Amadou Onana looking likely to exit the club this summer, they should pursue Ndidi on a free transfer

That came on the back of a report by Het Laatste Nieuws [30 May] that claimed Everton were one of a number of clubs interested in the midfielder.

After June 30 passed with no update on whether the 27-year-old had agreed an extension with the Foxes, Sean Dyche's side were encouraged to act fast and beat Lyon and Marseille to his signature [Santi Aouna, 20 June].

Describing the 58-cap international as a "midfield destroyer", Bardell believed that Ndidi would provide an excellent foil for the Blues' current options, but all bets are off as he enters the free agency market.

Everton must act quickly to ensure Wilfred Ndidi transfer

As a club hardly awash with cash this summer - despite the impending takeover of Roma owner Dan Friedkin - targeting players currently out of contract could prove to be a shrewd move for the Toffees [Liverpool Echo, 24 June].

Few players in that market have as much top-level Premier League experience as Ndidi, who was briefly one of the league's best defensive midfielders before injuries coincided with Leicester's spiralling form.

Everton Amadou Onana
Wilfred Ndidi could be an ideal replacement for Amadou Onana at Everton next season.

Now available for free having helped relegated Leicester secure an immediate return to the top flight with four goals in 32 Championship appearances, Ndidi would be a solid player for Dyche to add to his squad.

Having played in a slightly more advanced role under Enzo Maresca at the King Power Stadium, Ndidi would likely be deployed deeper, at the base of the Toffees' midfield, particularly if Onana departs [Foot Mercato, 28 June].

Andre Gomes and Dele Alli's departures have already vacated central midfield space that will need filling this summer, and with the Blues hoping to avoid another relegation battle next season, they could do much worse than picking up a player who has experienced the highs and lows of the Premier League.
