Zohran Mamdani digs himself out of Everton hole after Andy Burnham admission
Zohran Mamdani got himself stuck in an Everton-sized hole as he discussed Andy Burnham's choice of team in a new interview.
The Mayor of New York City is a huge football - or 'soccer' - fan and makes no secret of his love of Arsenal.
Mamdani is known to regularly shoehorn football references into speeches, with the peak 'Barclays' Premier League era often cited.
He landed one of US politics' top jobs at the start of the year, while Burnham may be sworn in as the UK's new Prime Minister as early as next month.
That could see the pair potentially cross paths down the line.
And if that happens, Mamdani at least now knows which team Burnham supports.
Zohran Mamdani asked about Andy Burnham's choice of support
Mamdani is doing plenty of interviews at the moment with broadcasters across the world.
This coincides with the World Cup being staged in the United States, including the state of New Jersey.
One such interview came with BBC 5 Live's Mark Chapman, with the subject of Burnham naturally coming up.
"I don't think he's an Arsenal supporter," Mamdani said. "I mean, at least you can respect that someone has suffered, you know."
That was met by some laughter, with the American of course eluding to the fact Everton have not had much to cheer about in recent times.
Trying to explain himself, Mamdani quickly added: "I like it when I meet someone who's a fan of a team that hasn't just won and won and won."
Mamdani's comments are entirely justified, of course, and it is indeed nice that Burnham supports his local team.
What has Burnham said about continuing to support Everton?
When Burnham takes over from Keir Starmer, it means his spare time will be extremely limited.
However, Burnham previously said he'd still watch Everton regularly even if he does become PM.
Time will tell whether that remains the case as and when he is sworn into Parliament.
But having a famous Everton fan in power certainly ensures the Toffees will continue to make headlines the world over.
