Everton defender Ben Godfrey has been seen in Italy amid the latest transfer news surrounding the defender, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The journalist took to X and shared pictures of the defender arriving in Bergamo ahead of his medical with Atalanta [Di Marzio, 28 June] on Friday.

The defender is said to be keen on a move to Atalanta due to them being included in the 2024/25 Champions League.

Why Ben Godfrey leaving Everton is good for both parties

Despite Godfrey being included in Sean Dyche's first team fold last season, a transfer away from Merseyside is likely a good thing for both Everton and the player.

The Bergamo club have acted swiftly to secure his transfer as they prepare to enter the new season.

It's likely that due to the ACL injury suffered by Georgio Scalvani, Gian Piero Gasperini is looking for a solid option to help strengthen his defence.

This move also helps the Toffees abide by PSR with the 30 June deadline lurking around the corner.

Last term was a torrid one for Dyche's men as the club suffered two points deductions, totalling eight points.

The sale of Godfrey not only helps ensure that they won't get sanctioned again but also improves their position to keep the Manchester United-linked Jarrad Branthwaite within their ranks.

Branthwaite was arguably the Toffees' best player last season and no matter how much they'd generate from his sale, it would be difficult to replace the youngster.

All in all, it feels as if Godfrey moving to the Serie A makes sense for both parties and it also provides the former Norwich man with an opportunity to play on Europe's grandest stage.
