David Moyes' surprise Dan Friedkin claim explains so much about Everton horror window

David Moyes isn't going to bat for Everton owner Dan Friedkin.

Despite an unbeaten start to the 2026-27 season in all competitions, the mood around Everton is incredibly sour right now.

This stems from the manner in which the Toffees' summer transfer window came to a hugely frustrating end.

Key striker Beto was allowed to leave for Fiorentina before a deal for Folarin Balogun was completed.

Naturally, the American international changed his mind on a move to Merseyside, leaving Moyes incredibly short up top.

And as criticism mounts from supporters towards The Friedkin Group (TFG) and Dan in particular, the Everton boss isn't trying to protect the Toffees chief.

What has David Moyes revealed about his Dan Friedkin relationship?

Football owners and chairman can take very different approaches to how they run their clubs.

Some prefer to be very hands on and public, which depending on their knowledge and experience in the game, can be a good or a bad thing.

On the flip side, others prefer to stay very hands off, leaving the running of the team to those they've entrusted in positions of power.

TFG have shown themselves to be more in the latter camp during their Everton tenure so far, but even so, what Moyes has now revealed is fairly unbelievable.

Detailed via a BBC Sport article, when asked if he'd ever spoken to or even met Everton owner Dan, Moyes replied: "No".

"My real contact is Angus (Kinnear)," Moyes continued. "Angus is the one who I would go to see.

"Rishi (Majithia) is the next one and then the head of the Friedkin family in America.

"I don't really get any direct conversations with them, but I do through Rishi, he is the one I would speak to."

So then, why does this revelation explain so much about the way in which Everton's summer transfer window came crashing down?

Doesn't feel like Dan Friedkin is taking Everton stewardship seriously enough

Since completing the takeover of Everton in December 2024, Friedkin has never once stepped foot on Merseyside to attend a home fixture.

Even on a base level of human psychology, it's hard to comprehend how Friedkin wouldn't be desperate to come and see Hill Dickinson Stadium on a matchday.

He's attended, albeit sparingly, numerous Roma matches during his time as owner there, showing he is willing to leave TFG's Houston base.

Never having attended a home game is one thing, but to have had zero contact with Moyes, a legendary Everton figure at that, for his entire 21- month reign is astonishing.

It's insulting in a way, and it certainly doesn't plant the seed for a fruitful and effective relationship to grow between owner and manager - one of the key relationships at any club.

Friedkin can be a standoff owner if he chooses, but to not even have a line of communication to his club's manager is ludicrous.

No wonder, then, that there was clear miscommunication and confusion towards the end of Everton's summer transfer window.
