Everton could be set to approach Newcastle over a deal for Sean Longstaff before the 3 February deadline, according to the Daily Mail.

The report on 30 January claims there has been talk of the Blues approaching the Magpies over a late deal for the midfielder.

The Athletic reported (28 January) that the Toffees hold a "longstanding interest" in the 27-year-old and there was an "outside chance" that he could leave St James' Park before the window shuts.

However, the latest update states that the midfielder has told Newcastle officials that he wants to stay and fight for his place at the club.

Everton need new midfielders

David Moyes' side are crying out for fresh impetus in the engine room before the transfer deadline on Thursday.

Idrissa Gana Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure are out of contract in the summer and Orel Mangala has also picked up a serious injury.

Summer signing Tim Iroegbunam is still out with an injury and has featured just six times in the Premier League for the Blues this campaign.

James Garner emerged as a key player under Sean Dyche but he has also struggled with fitness issues, making just five league appearances this season.

If a move for Longstaff is out of the question then the Toffees could reignite interest in Chelsea ace Carney Chukwuemeka but they would have to agree with the Londoners to terminate Armando Broja's loan first.

It remains to be seen whether the Goodison Park club bring in a new midfielder before the deadline but they should do everything within their power to do so.
