Everton have launched an offer to sign Roma defender Chris Smalling this summer, according to Il Sussidiario.

The Italian outlet has reported on their website that Jose Mourinho is happy to sell the Englishman after being appointed this summer.

Smalling has enjoyed a few fruitful years in Serie A after leaving Old Trafford under the same manager.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was tempted to keep Smalling after his initial loan deal in Italy but eventually sanctioned his permanent exit.

That wasn't before he labelled his performances as "Incredible" as he watched on from a distance.

Smalling hasn't had the best of seasons in the past year though, with numerous injuries halting his progression.

It appears as though Marcel Brands is wanting to complete his dealings quickly, even without a manager in charge at Goodison Park.

Really?

This is something we really don't want to be seeing.

Far too many mistakes have been made in our transfer policy in recent years, and this would be another one with Smalling much older and struggling with injuries.

Ben Godfrey needs to be handed the chance to stay in the middle next season, and with the likes of Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate in the squad, we have enough options.

This could be a real waste of money, and in a year where we're looking to be smarter with our business, making this our first move would be nothing short of a stinker.

Of course, the experience could be key, but we want players such as Denzel Dumfries, who have shined at the EUROs but are still in their prime.
