Everton have a "long-standing" interest in signing Sean Longstaff from Newcastle, according to The Athletic.

The outlet reported via their website on 28 January that multiple Premier League clubs have contacted the Magpies over signing the midfielder, although none of them are yet to make a formal offer.

Newcastle are likelier to sell Longstaff in the summer, but there is an "outside chance" that he leaves before the winter transfer window closes on 3 February as they look to avoid PSR sanctions.

Everton to sign Sean Longstaff from Newcastle?

Yes, Everton need new midfielders for next season as Idrissa Gueye and Abdoulaye Doucoure are in the final six months of their contracts, while Orel Mangala's loan deal expires in the summer.

However, it is hard to see the Merseyside-based club make a move for Longstaff, who Newcastle boss Eddie Howe once described as "excellent" [Sky Sports], in the final days of the window.

They are likely to step up their interest in the 27-year-old in the summer rather than now.

The Toffees are better off focusing on strengthening other areas of the pitch first this time as they look to avoid relegation this season.

Centre-forward has emerged as a problem area for the Goodison Park outfit after Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined Armando Broja on the treatment table in the 1-0 win against Brighton on Saturday, 25 January.

Beto, meanwhile, has already agreed to join Torino and is likely to put an end to his association with David Moyes' side in the coming days [Tuttosport].

Likewise, Everton may also consider bringing in a right-sided attacker as Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison's performances this season have left much to be desired.
