Everton are now showing a "serious" interest in signing Ajax defender Devyne Rensch, according to Algemeen Dagblad.

The news outlet reported on 13 January that along with the Toffees, Roma, Napoli and Marseille are also keen on the 21-year-old right-back.

It's also understood that while the Toffees are keen on January signings, Roma have made a £4.2million bid for the Netherlands international but that was turned down by Ajax.

Everton desperately need a new right-back in the January transfer window

The club's right-back position is in dire need of reinforcement, with both Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman facing significant challenges due to age and injury concerns.

At 39, Young's performances have been inconsistent and his age is becoming a liability for a club aiming for competitive stability.

Coleman, at 36, has been a stalwart for the Toffees but his injury record, particularly a severe knee injury in recent years, has made him less reliable.

The club lack quality depth in this position, with Nathan Patterson's potential not fully realised due to his own injury setbacks, leaving the team often resorting to makeshift solutions.

Interest in Ajax's Rensch, a young and proven defender at just 21, underscores Everton's urgent need to secure a long-term, high-quality option at right-back.

The Dutch defender's potential signing could provide the necessary dynamism and reliability the Toffees desperately need to strengthen their backline and improve their defensive strategy.
