Everton to breathe sigh of relief as Alexander Sorloth agreement reached
Everton had been linked with a move to sign former Crystal Palace and current Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth.
The Toffees finished the previous campaign winless in their last seven Premier League games, which, in turn, saw them miss out on European football for yet another season.
Not only did that spark some debate regarding David Moyes' future, but it also amplified the importance of the upcoming summer transfer window, with plenty of recruitment expected at Hill Dickinson.
Given the struggles of Beto and Thierno Barry, and the lack of options after that, it's likely that Everton will be prioritising the arrival of a new striker.
Sorloth was one of those mooted for a move to Merseyside, in what would have been another calamitous transfer.
How likely are Everton to sign Alexander Sorloth?
Fortunately for many reasons, not very likely at all.
Matteo Moretto has since reported that the Norway striker has agreed contract terms with Juventus ahead of a potential transfer this summer, albeit with negotiations still underway to settle on a fee.
The 30-year-old scored 13 LaLiga goals last term, having made 35 appearances, which is a respectable return.
However, while his numbers abroad have been impressive, his numbers in England weren't, albeit with his last stint here being back in the 2018/19 season.
Sorloth managed just one goal in 20 appearances for Crystal Palace.
Everton set to avoid transfer howler
Signing Sorloth would have been a huge mistake for Everton, despite the goals he has scored over the last few campaigns for various clubs.
With Barry and Beto, the Toffees have two target-man-style forwards who offer very little in that sense, while only really getting involved in general play when a clear chance at goal presents itself.
Sorloth would have been a near-identical profile to those two, which is far from what they need if they are to progress in the Premier League.
Everton certainly need to add another striker to their squad this summer, though it needs to be someone with years on his side, and someone who can offer something different to what they already have at their disposal.
