Bryan King doesn't understand why Everton are re-signing goalkeeper Asmir Begović.

The ex-Everton scout can't see the 37-year-old putting any pressure on Jordan Pickford for a starting place at Goodison Park.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (20 August), the Toffees have agreed on a one-year deal with Begović, with the shot-stopper likely to undergo his medical in the next 48 hours.

And King - speaking exclusively to Goodison News - has shared his thoughts on the imminent transfer.

"What is the point of bringing Begović back?" King said.

"He is going to return to the club as a backup goalkeeper for Pickford. However, I can't see him putting any pressure on Pickford to become the number one.

"I'm sure he will be able to do a job as a number two, but not on a long-term basis that is for sure."

Everton agree one-year deal with Asmir Begović at Goodison Park

This won't be a signing which gets supporters on their feet at Goodison Park.

In fact, it is hard to imagine Begović playing much football during the 2024/25 campaign. However, his experience could prove useful in the dressing room.

Having an established senior player around the squad is never a bad thing, and the Bosnian's presence could help the Toffees should they find themselves in another relegation scrap.
