FIFA could block Manchester United's deal to beat Everton to the signing of James Overy, according to Alan Nixon.

The journalist reported via his Patreon [21 July] that the Toffees had shown interest in the young Australian before accepting a scholarship with Man United, who now face a battle to get a deal done.

He joined Newton Abbott Spurs in March and was not allowed to join any other club for 16 weeks as this would be regarded as a "bridge transfer" and against the rules.

United attempted to sign the player during that period and the process is now being delayed while the club await approval from FIFA to get the deal done.

Could Everton swoop in to steal James Overy from Manchester United?

The 17-year-old looks to be an extremely exciting talent, having attracted interest from Premier League clubs almost instantly after moving to England from Australia.

The Toffees will feel that Goodison Park could have been a better breeding ground for the young full-back, especially with the ageing duo of Seamus Coleman and Ashley Young currently available to Sean Dyche.

While United have offered a scholarship to the youngster [Manchester Evening News], the transfer has not officially been finalised, which could see the Toffees attempt a last-minute snatch for the right-back.

This would be an incredible coup for the Merseyside club, to attract a talented youth prospect despite interest from elsewhere, though the Red Devils seem confident they can get the deal done.

The allure of joining the academy ranks at Old Trafford is probably too much of an important factor to change the young footballer's mind now, especially with his family finding a house in the Cheshire suburbs.

Although it is a highly unlikely deal to re-emerge at Goodison Park, it is certainly a story to keep one eye on this summer.
