That pursuit has gone cold over the last few weeks but the news of Eddie Howe's departure could very well reignite the links.

According to widespreat reports, Matthias Jaissle is in line to succeed Howe at St. James' Park.

And his arrival could force Murphy into having to make a decision over his future.

At 31 years old, Murphy would be a short-term signing for Everton, but the Englishman still boasts plenty of quality.

With Murphy at that age, he may not have many years at the top level left and he will want to play as much football as possible.

With David Ornstein sharing that Jaissle is Newcastle's top target to takeover from Howe, Murphy will be looking on with worry.

The German manager's tactics do not often involve the profile that Murphy possesses.

His 4-3-1-2 diamond set-up prefers to use split strikers up top, with the fullbacks the players that hold the width.

For Murphy, he is not an inverted winger but more so a traditional touchline attacker.

The Englishman rarely frequents the areas in and around the box, often preferring to remain wide and causing a threat there.

For Jaissle, that is not what he will be expecting, and Murphy could find his game time limited.

Everton, though, are in need of someone like Murphy on the wing and if Jaissle is appointed, that could hand them a boost in their pursuit.

Why Newcastle may be tempted to sell Murphy now

Murphy's contract at Newcastle is entering its final year, with it expiring in June 2027.

If Howe had stayed at Newcastle, the Geordies may have decided to just take the hit and keep a player that fit the mould of the 48-year-old's style.

However, with Murphy seemingly unlikely to fit into Jaissle's plans, based on previous work of the German, they could now be tempted to try and bring in some funds.

Deciding to keep a player that may not play and then ultimately losing them on a free would not be smart business.

If the Toffees are still keen on Murphy, they will surely be confident of striking a deal now.
