How James Garner schooled £177m Tottenham duo and what it means for his own Everton value

James Garner was on top form for Everton in their 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

The Toffees kept their unbeaten start to the Premier League going, drawing their third consecutive game in the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Though the Blues had to dig deep to keep the clean sheet, they had chances of their own to bring all three points back to L3.

David Moyes will most likely agree that Garner was once again the man who held everything together for Everton, and without him, they may not have got any type of result at all.

The ex-Manchester United man was partnered by Harrison Armstrong in the middle of the park, before Hayden Hackney once again made his way onto the pitch from the bench.

But Garner's performance has only been made even more impressive given the quality of midfielders that he was showing up in north London.

Ex-Spurs boss Thomas Frank was drooling over Garner's performance, describing it as "exceptional" against the Dane's former side.

He was up against a midfield pairing of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, who were both brought to the Lilywhites for big money in the summer.

Tonali and Fernandes cost Tottenham a combined reported total of £177million, which shows the level of player that Everton have on their hands with Garner.

The 25-year-old had the most defensive contributions in the game with 17, and only misplaced five of his 51 attempted passes at a completion rate of 90 per cent.

Tonali and Fernandes only made 15 defensive actions combined, including two tackles, while Everton's all-action midfielder made six, which also included a last-man intervention.

But what should this mean for Garner's value?

Garner signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal earlier this year, and is contracted to Everton until June of 2030.

His Transfermarkt value stands at £35m - a figure which steadily increased throughout the course of last season.

Now, Garner is on track to keep multiplying his value as the season goes on.

His performance edges him closer to an England call-up, which will only take his value even higher if given a chance by Thomas Tuchel.

He is untouchable for Everton, and will surely demand a near club-record fee to be sold in the future if he carries on in this manner, although supporters will of course hope he sticks around for a number of years to come.
