How Merlin Rohl can help save Angus Kinnear's skin after Everton transfer controversy

Merlin Rohl could offer Everton a saving grace after a controversial end to the summer transfer window.

The Toffees had a dramatic end to the window to say the least, but David Moyes has tried to spin things in a positive light.

The matter of the fact is that the Scot laid out his transfer wishes to Angus Kinnear and Co. before the window opened, and he has been somewhat let down on several fronts.

The glaring one is the striker situation, with Thierno Barry now the only senior striker at the club after Beto's departure, and, of course, the Folarin Balogun fall-through.

But another priority was to sign a right-back, and many see Ainsley Maitland-Niles' arrival as a panic addition, as he only cost a measly £4.2million.

However, what Rohl has already done at Everton this season can save Kinnear and the rest of the recruitment team - for now.

There is no certainty that Maitland-Niles will perform for the Toffees after his move from Lyon.

The Englishman already admitted that he isn't a full-back during his days with Arsenal, but has since evolved into one in France.

But the fact that Everton had set aside a £20m budget for a new right-back proves that Maitland-Niles is not the long-term answer.

What could spare Kinnear his job, though, is Rohl, who has already impressed at right-back early on this season.

The 24-year-old, who was signed from Freiburg permanently earlier in the summer for £19.7m, has an average FotMob rating of 7.08 in the position from his first two Premier League games of the season.

This means that even if Maitland-Niles does not work out, Moyes could yet have another short-term fix that could plug an obvious hole until January at the least.

But what business could Everton do in the next transfer window?

Everton came close to signing Kenny Tete from Fulham before deadline day.

However, the Cottagers were unable to recruit a replacement for the 30-year-old, and so he remained at Craven Cottage.

But there were no suggestions to say that Tete would not join, even if Maitland-Niles did.

Everton could go back in for the Dutchman in the winter, especially if Maitland-Niles hasn't proven that he is the answer for Moyes by then.

That's unless Rohl hasn't already cemented his place by then.
