Idrissa Gana Gueye could leave Everton for good in the near future.

The 36-year-old's deal expired on 30 June, so he is a free agent at the moment, but they are still in contract talks.

He featured 22 times in the Premier League for the Blues last season, despite his advancing age.

Gueye was away with Senegal at the World Cup, meaning Everton could not agree fresh terms with his entourage.

He has been a key player for the Toffees in recent years, but his influence has declined meaning that it is a complex decision.

It is unknown whether the veteran will still be at the Hill Dickinson Stadium next season, but new insight has emerged.

What is Idrissa Gueye's expected next move after Everton contract expiry?

Gueye is expected to move elsewhere rather than agreeing a new deal with the Merseysiders, but further talks are on the cards.

They are believed to be apart in their stances, the Blues want to give him less game time, but the player may think he could still form a significant part of a team.

Joe Thomas shared the latest in a Liverpool Echo Q&A on the transfer window.

The local journalist said: "I expect there to be more conversations between Everton and his camp but I do think there is a chance he could go.

"Everton are keen to reduce their reliance on a player who will turn 37 in September and he may well believe he can still play a significant role elsewhere.

"A compromise could be reached and deliberations over his extension last year, and when he returned to the club in 2022, were drawn out.

"But there is a possibility he has played his last game for Everton."

Do Everton still need Gueye as a part of their midfield group?

Everton may not need Gueye anymore, especially if they continue to add midfielders in the transfer window.

They have already sealed Hayden Hackney's signature, and he could take over the Senegal star's minutes in the squad, if Moyes does not deem him ready for an immediate starting role.

Harrison Armstrong is another midfield option that could benefit if the ageing ace is allowed to move on.

However, he could be used to help those talents to develop, if he does stick around for another season.

A one-year deal on the right terms could be a good move from the Friedkin Group, but whether the former Paris Saint-Germain man would agree to that remains to be seen.

He may well want a more prominent role and a better wage than what he would be offered by the L3 outfit, and could probably get it from Saudi Arabian clubs, if they try to sign him.

Whether the blues resign him, probably depends on whether he is willing to drop his wages and the duration of the deal on offer.
