Jordan Pickford has already told Everton why they should sign Sam Johnstone
Everton star Jordan Pickford has already had his say on Sam Johnstone.
The Blues goalkeeping department could be set for big changes behind the England number one yet again.
Mark Travers is the current back-up goalkeeper, having signed for £4million from Bournemouth last summer.
The Everton number two is being eyed by several clubs, so the Blues may need a new option sooner rather than later.
Johnstone would be a great contender for that role, as he has plenty of experience at the top level.
Pickford has already highlighted why he would be a quality addition to the ranks at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
What has Jordan Pickford said about Everton target Sam Johnstone?
Pickford has spent time with Johnstone in several England camps, with the latter making four caps for the Three Lions.
Bobby Manzi of the Daily Mail reported on Thursday that the Toffees have the Wolves stopper on their wider shortlist.
Pickford is a big fan of his competition for the national team role and spoke after Johnstone was given a chance against Romania in June 2021.
“Dean Henderson has come in the last few camps and Sam [Johnstone] made his debut and his performance against Romania was brilliant.
“So having that competition strives us all to be better as goalkeepers.”
That is a glowing reference, and David Moyes and Co would have surely asked for his opinion before making their move.
Why Sam Johnstone move makes sense for Everton
Pickford would surely still be the starter on Merseyside, as he has not put a foot wrong since signing for the Blues.
Johnstone would be a very capable backup, though, who could step in if Pickford needs a rest or is injured.
There would probably be more trust in him, than Travers, given that he has featured 85 times in the Premier League for Wolves, Crystal Palace and West Brom.
The move could work out to be a quality one for the Toffees, they would have a better back-up, who their main goalkeeper rates highly, and could recoup some of the fee for the Irishman.
It remains to be seen if it comes off, but surely it has Pickford's approval already based on his previous comments.
It makes sense for all parties, as Travers has not been handed the game time that he would have wanted and Johnstone may be happy to warm the bench, given his advancing age.
