Manchester United attempted a last-minute hijack of Amadou Onana's transfer from Everton to Aston Villa, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

The Belgian journalist reported via X (19 July) that the Red Devils made a better financial offer for Onana than Aston Villa.

However, the player decided on a move to Villa having given his word to Unai Emery while prioritising the sporting project in the West Midlands.

Onana will now fly to Birmingham to complete his medical tests and move to the club on Sunday (21 July). Everton will receive £45million plus £5million in bonuses and 10 per cent of any future sale.

Manchester United attempt to sign Amadou Onana from Everton ahead of Aston Villa

For Villa supporters, this will come as a huge boost ahead of Onana'a arrival at the club.

Discovering that the player rejected a switch to Old Trafford in favour of joining Emery at the club will only boost the 22-year-old's popularity among supporters.

For United supporters, this will come as quite the body blow. Failing to lure a player to the club, with that player then going on to prefer a move to Villa, demonstrates how much the power has shifted in the Premier League.

But most importantly, for Everton, fans at Goodison Park might perhaps be a bit frustrated by this update.

They were unlikely to have too much interest in whether Onana joined United or Villa but instead, be focused on how much they would get from a deal.

With United offering better financial terms, it will frustrate those at Everton - a club always in need of a cash influx - that Onana chose to sign for Villa.
