Mason Holgate has played his final game for Everton as a loan move to West Brom is set to go through tonight, according to Harry Watkinson.

The TEAMtalk journalist reported via his personal X account [30 August] in a late-night update that Holgate is to join West Brom for the duration of the 2024-25 season.

Watkinson adds that, with the defender out of contract at Goodison Park next summer, he "has played his last game for Everton".

Mason Holgate's Everton career comes to an end

Holgate's future on Merseyside has looked bleak for a while and an exit was always expected.

The biggest surprise in many ways is that it has taken up to the final seconds of Deadline Day.

The centre-back had disappointed spells at Southampton and then Sheffield United last season.

With Jarrad Branthwaite remaining at Goodison Park and Jake O'Brien arriving, playing time was of course going to be limited for Holgate this season.

Lyon were interested in taking him off Everton's books, but a deal collapsed earlier on Deadline Day [Paul Joyce, 30 August].

Holgate has instead opted to drop back down to the Championship to a club he knows well in West Brom.

After close to a decade at Goodison Park, it will not be easy for Holgate to say bye. Ultimately, though, it is a deal that was inevitable and he will leave with everyone's best wishes.
