Mauro Icardi remains a free agent despite a number of clubs showing an interest, Everton among them.

The 33-year-old has been without a team since leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season.

Icardi has scored 250 career goals at club level and won 13 trophies, most recently the Super Lig title with Gala.

However, nearly two months into the 2026-27 season and Icardi is still without a club.

Everton were first credited with an interest in Icardi last month, but nothing came of it.

A new report has new provided an update on how far that interest went, while also sharing the latest on the free agent striker himself.

How advanced was Everton interest in Mauro Icardi?

Supporters understandably fear Icardi is over the hill, even if he is still 'only' 33.

He was one of the hottest strikers in European football a decade ago when at Inter Milan, leading to a move to Paris Saint-Germain, where he was hailed a "monster" by pundit Nabil Djellit.

Since then he has gone off the radar a little, with the past four years spent in Turkish football with Galatasaray.

Still, beggars cannot be choosers and Everton are in desperate need of another striker, ideally before January.

As per a report from TYC Sports on Wednesday, Everton have held negotiations with Icardi, as have fellow Premier League side Tottenham.

However, that did not stretch as far as a formal offer being made to the former Argentina international.

Fiorentina and Lazio were said to have been personally offered Icardi, who seemed open to joining the latter, but boss Gennaro Gattuso did not want him.

Amid all the talk over his next career move, which at this stage does not appear to be Hill Dickinson Stadium, Icardi took to social media.

What message has Icardi posted?

The same report mentions how Icardi's latest social media post has gone "viral".

He posted an image of himself working out in the gym and added the caption: "They confuse unemployment with failure; I call it a settled life.

"They confuse being without a contract with being without options. I call it freedom of choice.

"I worked to be the master of my own time, to have my future secured. If I stopped working, my life would go on the same.

"I don't understand your concerns about me. Live peacefully, live in tranquillity and with so much love. I already have everything."

Reading between the lines, Icardi is basically saying he is happy to just carry on as he is.

There was previously talk that Icardi could retire if the right opportunity does not arise, so you have to wonder if this is his way of confirming that news.

Everton could do with a free agent striker to keep them ticking over, but that man is unlikely to be Icardi.
