Terrible Dominic Calvert-Lewin sale on cards at Everton after PSR trouble
Everton selling Dominic Calvert-Lewin over Amadou Onana this summer makes more financial sense as profit and sustainability rules bite, according to Paul Brown.
The journalist has responded to Calvert-Lewin drawing interest from Newcastle United and said that with Everton needing to "generate profit quickly", the sale of their number nine makes financial sense.
In a post on X, Brown acknowledged that selling Calvert-Lewin would be a "terrible idea" for plans on the pitch, but added that only having one year left on his contract means the striker could well leave Goodison Park this summer.
Calvert-Lewin scored seven goals in 33 Premier League appearances this season as Everton survived relegation despite two points deductions, and could be sold for the Blues to avoid similar PSR breaches in the future.

There's no two ways about it - Everton need money, and quickly.
When fit, there are few players capable of leading the line quite like Calvert-Lewin, most recently exemplified in the Toffees' 2-0 win over Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby.
Calvert-Lewin's bullet header sealed victory in the second half of that game, but that's a rare highlight in what's been an otherwise troubling season for the 27-year-old.
His fitness issues at Goodison Park are well-documented, and with just 12 months to run on his current contract, the Toffees hierarchy would be wise to listen to approaches made for his services.
Brown mentioned highly-rated defender Jarrad Branthwaite alongside Calvert-Lewin in his example of players whom it would make financial sense for Everton to cash in on this summer, though the pair's careers are currently at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Branthwaite could be just days away from a plane ticket to Euro 2024 as part of the England squad, while Calvert-Lewin's last international cap came back in 2021, and his form in recent seasons has come nowhere near warranting a recall.
Money is tight and is needed to help keep the Blues' heads above water this summer, and with the potential of Calvert-Lewin to leave for free in a year, the Toffees must make sure they make the most out of any offer which comes their way.
