The latest on Mauro Icardi free agency after Everton transfer talks

Mauro Icardi remains on the market after links with Everton.

The Argentine striker is a free agent after leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season and has been suggested as a transfer option for the Toffees.

After failing to get a deal over the line for Folarin Balogun, David Moyes has been left with just one natural number nine in Thierno Barry.

Icardi has emerged as a target at Hill Dickinson Stadium, but Everton don't seem to be pushing for a move as of yet.

Things could potentially change regarding the Blues' stance if something happens to Barry in the coming weeks.

A return to Italy has also been mooted for the 33-year-old, but another club seem to have been dismissed as an option.

Icardi was pushing for a move to Lazio, but it doesn't look like things are progressing on that front.

Now, Napoli have emerged as the latest club to show an interest in the attacker, but those rumours have been dismissed already.

Italian journalist Giovanni Scotto, who has over 12,000 followers on X, including Sky Sports' Gianluca Di Marzio, has outlined two reasons Massimiliano Allegri's team won't sign the Argentine forward.

Icardi will likely demand a high salary, having earned more than £7.3million at Galatasaray.

Speaking on his YouTube channel on 24 September, Scotto said, "There is this rumour circulating about Icardi joining Napoli. This rumour is being exaggerated a bit. Napoli has no desire to do this type of operation.

"The first reason is certainly the very high salary and Icardi was earning more than €8.5m at Galatasaray in Turkiye. The other reason is also a matter of both age and condition."

What Thierno Barry start has shown at Hill Dickinson Stadium

Barry has played a prominent role at Everton this season, playing over 400 minutes after five Premier League matches.

Moyes doesn't have many options at his disposal, with Brennan Johnson deployed as a centre-forward at times already.

Barry has scored two league goals, but the Frenchman has missed six big chances, as per Sofascore.

It doesn't look like the 23-year-old has improved his goalscoring qualities since last season and the Scottish manager certainly can't rely on him to find the back of the net regularly.

Icardi might not be an ideal fit for the Toffees due to his age and style of play.

While the Blues might cope without another striker for now, they can't afford to miss out on signing one in January.
